Well, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, furmanshchiki was the name given to catchers of stray dogs. The word most probably derives from fura, a cart or wagon, a furmanshchik being one who drives a fura.

The term came into use in connection with that clinging ailment of 1771, the plague. The furmanshchiki, who were also the mortuses, were those very men in black waxed cloaks and masks who dragged corpses about with hooks on long poles and gathered them into long carts.
