"A citizen of Russia travelling from Mongolia to Russia through the Kyakhta MAPP customs post was carrying in his accompanied baggage two fragments of petrified bone tissue with a total weight of 2.45 kilograms. Experts determined that, by their morphological features, the fossils are fragments of a dinosaur skeleton: the first is a fragment of the upper end of a dinosaur's femur, the second a fragment of the shoulder blade of an ornithischian dinosaur," says the statement.
The agency noted that the man had found the bones in the canyon of the Kimcha Depression and taken them for himself as souvenirs. According to the offender, he did not know that such things had to be declared.
Proceedings for an administrative offence have been opened over the incident. The man faces a fine of up to twice the value of the bones.
