Outdated Russian transcription of Bosch, Leonardo and Vermeer in a 1930 book
If you ever fancy reading a hundred-year-old book on art at your leisure, be prepared to fail to recognise half the names you meet, or at the very least to be surprised. Gieronimus Bos instead of Bosch, Lionardo spelt with an I, Yan fan Eyk, Van-Dyck with a hyphen, Yan Fermer, known to us as Vermeer: so greatly did the transcription of foreign words in Russian change over the twentieth century, and mind you, the edition in my hands dates from only 1930.
