So I have visited the Golubitskoye wine estate on Taman myself, the one I wrote about in connection with Alisa Ioffe's exhibition. The estate lies in an old Cossack stanitsa named after the sotnik Grigory Golubitsky, who earned in the Russo-Turkish war not only the rank of colonel from Prince Grigory Potemkin-Tavrichesky, but these lands as well. The stanitsa is a veritable resort and looks rather more like Crete than the Krasnodar Territory, and the wine-growing estate itself spreads between the largest freshwater body of the region, the Akhtanizovsky Estuary, and the Sea of Azov, or more precisely the Temryuk Bay. So, standing on the terrace of the rather eclectic Tuscan-style Golubitskoye villa, you see on your left the estuary with its lotus islands, on your right the Sea of Azov, and somewhere behind your back, seventy kilometres away, the Kerch Strait.
