Valery Gergiev's Concert Cancelled in Italy
On 27 July, as part of the "Summer of the King" festival, Gergiev was due to perform with the Verdi Philharmonic Orchestra of Salerno, joined by soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre. The announced programme included works by Giuseppe Verdi, Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Maurice Ravel.
Earlier, Pina Picierno, Vice-President of the European Parliament and a member of Italy's opposition Democratic Party, had called for the concert to be cancelled. She has already used political pressure to have events involving Russian artists called off.
Valery Gergiev himself, for his part, said that he was unaware of the cancellation of his concert.
