Egg with yolk and white intact found in England, 1,700 years old

An egg with its yolk and white intact, 1,700 years old, has been found in England. The egg was discovered during the excavation of a Roman-period site in Aylesbury, 60 kilometres north-west of London, together with three other eggs, which broke on being dug out, releasing a dreadful smell as they did so. Examination of the surviving egg showed that the liquid of the yolk and white had been preserved inside. It is not the oldest egg ever found, but it is the oldest of those found that were not deliberately preserved: the other eggs come from Egyptian tombs. The find-spot was a pit that appears to have served for offerings to the gods, and thanks to the high humidity in it other objects have survived as well.
