A US student demanded her tuition money back after catching her professor using ChatGPT
Ella Stapleton, a student at Northeastern University, has demanded the return of $8,000 in tuition fees after discovering that her lecturer had used AI to produce teaching materials and prepare for classes, even though students are forbidden to use neural networks.
The student noticed obvious signs of AI use in the professor's lecture notes: a stray reference to ChatGPT in the bibliography, recurring typos, and images of people with extra limbs in the presentations.
After lodging a formal complaint with Northeastern's business school, Stapleton demanded a refund of the fee for the entire course from the professor.
Under the university's AI policy, both faculty and students are obliged to declare the use of neural networks when producing academic work or other public materials. Even so, the student's claim was rejected. In response to her complaint, Professor Rick Arrowood admitted that he had used ChatGPT, Perplexity AI and the Gamma presentation generator, and spoke of the need for transparency in the use of AI. He now believes that teachers should think carefully about how they integrate neural networks and tell students honestly when and how they are used.
Many American colleges restrict or entirely ban the use of AI on their campuses. The technology's spread has bred mistrust between students and teachers: the latter eagerly punish pupils for using neural networks in their work.
Now the tables have turned: students themselves have begun to complain on sites such as Rate My Professors, accusing their teachers of excessive reliance on AI. They argue that it undermines the very point of paid education, since they are paying to be taught by people, not by technologies that anyone can use independently and free of charge.
The destruction of the higher education system in recent years:
- the introduction of meaningless pseudo-scientific courses such as gender theory
- the move to remote learning during lockdown, kept in place after lockdown ended
- woke censorship
- the introduction of artificial intelligence into the teaching process
