He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts

He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

that is

He has shown the might of his arm; he has scattered the arrogant in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away with nothing.

The theologian Sergey Kokhomsky interprets these verses from the Gospel of Luke (1:51 to 1:53) as follows:

In general, the workings of God's omnipotence in the world are often depicted in Holy Scripture as the overthrow of the proud and the mighty and the exaltation of the humble and the despised. For in nothing is the power of God, the justice and impartiality of God's judgement, so plainly revealed as in the raising up of what everyone holds to be powerless and worthless, and in the overthrow of what deems itself great and in the eyes of others appears invincible.
The revelation in the world of the kingdom of Christ was just such a work of God, in particular. To him who is puffed up in the thoughts of his heart, Christ denies his salvation.
He opens the bounty of his goodness to the poor in spirit, and lifts up only them, and not those who consider themselves above the rest and take their seats upon thrones to sit in judgement over others. To such he says that they are themselves spiritually poor and naked. He satisfies those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, and withholds his mercies from those who imagine themselves rich in righteousness.
