From 6 May 2023, prayers for members of the English royal family, and forms of address to them, are to be amended so that the words "Camilla, Queen Consort" give way to "Queen Camilla"
A favourite subject for Camilla's opponents and Diana's partisans. I myself much prefer Diana, but it must be admitted that it was decidedly odd for the words "Queen Consort" ever to have been permitted in royal prayers.
First of all, the decree of Charles III is an attempt to ease people's attitude towards Queen Camilla.
True, anointing and coronation in no way alter the legal status of a queen. Camilla remains a consort. But if people wish to use the form "Queen Consort" when speaking of her, they ought still to say "Queen Camilla, the Queen Consort", and not "Queen Consort Camilla" or simply "the Queen Consort". "Consort" is not a title but a description of a status.
For more than half a century England had another consort, Prince Philip. No one called him "Philip, Prince Consort": that was understood without saying.
