But
But. You see, "the trouble is not with the personality of the despot who oppresses his family and everyone around him. He is powerless and insignificant in himself; he can be deceived, removed, thrown into a pit at last... But the point is that with his destruction despotism does not disappear. It is contagious, and its seeds fall into the very people who suffer from it. Lawless, it undermines trust in law; dark and false at its root, it drives away every ray of truth; senseless and capricious, it kills common sense and every capacity for rational, purposeful activity; coarse and oppressive, it destroys all bonds of love and confidence, destroys even confidence in oneself, and weans men from honest, open action. That is precisely why it is dangerous to society! To destroy the despot would be easy, if honest people set about it energetically. But the trouble is that under the influence of despotism the most honest people dwindle and waste away in slavish inactivity, while only those in whom the properly human sides of character are least developed get things done. And the activity of these people, owing to the complete perversion of their notions under the influence of despotism, is likewise petty, private and crudely egoistic in character. Their aim is not to destroy the despotism from which they suffer so much, but only somehow to bring the despot down and take his place themselves."
