Huge canvases were carried through Moscow lanes rolled on wooden and plywood rollers
Not long ago, at a lecture by a very educated woman, the question was put of how enormous canvases were carried through the narrow lanes of Moscow to be hung in the mansion of a famous collector. How astonished I was that this lady-in-waiting of the writing profession could not answer what seemed such a simple question, but I kept my head down, so as not to set the esteemed speaker against me. The answer is elegant and lies quite on the surface: the paintings were rolled onto large wooden and plywood rollers, and that is how they were transported. Canvases were carried in the same way from one museum to another, and during the evacuation they were packed in the same manner.
