In an 1856 photograph by the Berlin photographer Leopold Ahrendts, attentive spectators on the steps of Schinkel's Altes Museum in Berlin are absorbed in August Kiss's sculpture "Amazon on Horseback Attacked by a Panther". Cast in the 1840s, the sculpture was a sensation for the Berlin of its day, and this example of dynamic realism changed ideas about public sculpture.

On the other side of the steps, Albert Wolff's "Lion Fighter" was installed in 1861.

The inscription on the museum's frieze records that Frederick William III founded the museum in 1828 for the study of antiquities of every kind and of the liberal arts.
