A fine piece on one untranslated novel by Ruth Rendell has appeared on Gorky

I have long wanted to draw attention to Claude Chabrol's film "La Cérémonie", which we watched with the lads at my film club; the article mentions it too.

The point is that this social drama, which in its day won a great many awards, is now undeservedly neglected. It is one more reason why I was dissatisfied with Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" and the universal raptures over this Oscar-winning picture: in my humble opinion, "Parasite" is simply a remake of Chabrol, shot in Korean circumstances. Not to mention that the story at its foundation is itself an old subject of European drama about servants and masters. This is often overlooked, but the plot of "La Cérémonie" rests not merely on a novel but on a real story, about which the newspapers wrote a great deal at the time: a housemaid brutally murders her employers, and this shocking killing was examined from the standpoint of social inequality and resentment, and found a great response in culture.
