Biased view of France and the Battle of Agincourt in Netflix’s film “The King”
As usual, The King is not without its traditional Francophobia. The view of France, the French, French chivalry and the French king is prejudiced and one-sided. The Netflix film was undoubtedly made with English political interests in mind. It is sad that France lacks the resources to answer in kind. And it is sad that the French have no Timothée Chalamet of their own, who could rework historical facts with equal virtuosity to flatter their national history.
Strange as it may seem, a single film can indeed devalue the years of work of historians, for example, who painstakingly reconstructed the actual circumstances of the battle and of the age in general. The worst of it is that the wider public often prefers a film to a book, especially one so striking and modern. All would be well, were it not a matter of real people who laid down their lives at Agincourt.
