Aulus Aemilius paved a square in Terracina and left an inscription in bronze letters
How should one speak of one's good deeds? A fellow a couple of thousand years ago, for instance, had his name cut into stone on the main square of the resort town of Terracina, on the approaches to Rome along the Appian Way, in huge bronze letters. Made to last for ever, one can see at once. The inscription reads: "A. Aemilius A. F. Stravi(t)". That is, literally, "Aulus Aemilius, son of Aulus, paved this". Well done, Comrade Aemilius, we are fond of you. I do not know whether the local magistrate of the 1st century BC paid for the laying out of this square (and walking about in the mud had become very inconvenient) out of his own pocket, or procured the allocation of public funds, or of some other kind, but the forum stands to this day and is known by the name of the Foro Emiliano, in honour of that good man.
