Nikolay Zabolotsky’s poem “On the Beauty of Human Faces” with a painting by Sychkov

Literal translation

There are faces like magnificent portals,
Where greatness seems to dwell in everything small.
There are faces, the likeness of wretched hovels,
Where liver is boiled and tripe lies soaking.
Other faces, cold and dead,
Are shut behind bars, like a dungeon.
Others are like towers in which long since
No one lives and no one looks out of the window.
But a small hut I once knew,
It was plain, it was not rich,
Yet from its little window upon me
Streamed the breath of a spring day.
Truly the world is both great and wonderful!
There are faces like jubilant songs.
Out of these notes, shining like the sun,
Is composed the song of the heavenly heights.
