“Maiden on the Beast” by Natalya Goncharova from the “Harvest” polyptych and the Apocalypse
The Maiden on the Beast. Natalia Goncharova. 1911. Kostroma Museum-Reserve collection; the painting is on permanent display at the Romanov Museum.
"The Maiden on the Beast" is part of the nine-part polyptych "The Harvest", whose paintings are now held in different collections, while two are considered lost altogether.
A girl astride a monster with several heads: what does this subject remind us of? First and foremost, of course, the Whore of Babylon, who appears in the Apocalypse riding a scarlet beast. The entire "Harvest" polyptych depicts not a harvest festival at all, but the vision of John the Divine from the fourteenth chapter of the Book of Revelation
