After the painting in this photograph was put on display at MoMA, one of the trustees promptly resigned his seat on the board.
What we see here is, of course, not Malevich's Black Square. It is an entirely monochrome canvas by the New York abstractionist Adolph, or Ad, Reinhardt, a champion of abstract expressionism. In the last ten years of his life Ad Reinhardt painted nothing but square canvases of pure black.
