Frida Kahlo in the 1933 press as Diego Rivera's wife and amateur artist

The muralist's wife amuses herself with works of art. Can you imagine that this might have been written about Frida Kahlo?

An unexpected mention of Frida in the press of 1933, in the column "Visiting Interesting People", and visiting not her at all, but her husband, the painter Diego Rivera.

It is written simply: there is the great Rivera and his wife Carmen Rivera, whom her friends call "Frida", an amateur artist, which few people know. Yes, in the Rivera household he is not the only one smearing brushes and canvases; there is also a cheerful dilettante wife.

Frida tactfully clarifies that her husband did not teach her to paint, and that in fact nobody did. Small wonder, for before her marriage to Rivera she already had dozens of paintings to her name.

The works of "Señora Rivera" are generously granted the epithet "interesting". The happy self-taught dabbler daubs away at something in her spare time, while her distinguished husband cuts a fine figure at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

It was wonderful when Frida, without the slightest embarrassment, told a journalist that Diego was doing quite well for a little boy, but "the big artist is me". I wonder what she meant? 😏
