Envy of the Soviet Passport against the Brooklyn Bridge and the legendary neo-Gothic Woolworth Building, at the time of the photograph the tallest building in the world
That is to say, the page from issue 7 of the magazine "USSR in Construction" for 1940 is a photomontage. Mayakovsky, in overcoat and hat, holding a gigantic Soviet foreign passport, was superimposed on this historic photograph by Irving Underhill, taken in 1921.
The most amusing thing is that by the time this poster was published in 1940, indeed by the time of Mayakovsky's death in 1930, this part of the New York panorama had already changed a great deal. And the Americans already envied the Soviet passport while having, on that very stretch of the city, the 283-metre Manhattan Company Building, the 122-metre 120 Wall Street Building, and, by 1932, the 290-metre Cities Service Building and a great many other giants of the Wall Street financial district.
