Surrealism exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris shows the contribution of women artists

The "Surrealism" exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris is simply magnificent. The presentation of Surrealism is built around the manuscript of André Breton's "Manifesto of Surrealism", displayed in a round glass case. The exhibition gives a comprehensive account of the diversity of Surrealism's history and should itself become a significant milestone in its study.

Alongside the classics of Surrealism, the display includes less familiar representatives of the later movements and international Surrealist artists, but what is especially new is the account of the contribution made by women to the development of Surrealism after the 1930s and 1940s, a contribution that proves to have been very considerable indeed. Consider, for example, the paintings of such artists as Breton's wife Jacqueline Lamba, the Czech Toyen, the Spaniard Remedios Varo, the Franco-Belarusian-Jewish Marcelle Loubchansky, the Hungarian Judit Reigl, the Englishwoman Edith Rimmington, the Frenchwoman Valentine Hugo and the American Dorothea Tanning
