For everyone who loves Elizabeth Taylor's Cleopatra of 1963, I recommend comparing her with Amanda Barrie's Cleo in the 1964 comic film "Carry On Cleo", from the long-running Carry On series, made in the wake of the film classic. It must be said that, for all the lightness of its genre, the second picture is no less interesting than the first. True, in places the comedy is simply dreadful, but so dreadful that it becomes interesting; besides, tradition has left its mark here: a solid British comedy does, after all, stand a chance of going toe to toe with the American peplum.
