Matisse's Watercolour Sketch for The Red Studio at the Unknown Shchukin Exhibition
Beside Matisse's "Pink Studio" at the Pushkin Museum's new exhibition "The Unknown Shchukin" hangs a watercolour sketch of the painting "The Red Studio", which he enclosed in a letter to Shchukin, counting on the collector's support. Shchukin could now have hung the two Matisse studios side by side, the pink and the red, and produced a quite extraordinary effect. But Shchukin declined to acquire the canvas. The owner of "The Red Studio" became the Briton David Tennant, and after him the MoMA. Matisse's watercolour of the red studio has been hung on a red panel matching the size of the painting itself
