Dmitry Pavlovich was a member of the Russian equestrian team, the sport having been added to the Olympic programme that year. The team had already won the steeplechase in London, taking the prize of King Edward VII. At the Olympics, however, in none of the disciplines (eventing, jumping and dressage) did the seven Russian riders win any medals. In jumping we were awarded fifth place in the team event, while the Grand Duke received only ninth place in the individual standings and the nickname of "Olympian".

The journal "Russky Sport" wrote of it thus: "The Russians did indeed draw attention to themselves, but they were unlucky in the concours hippique, the jumping competition. Lieutenant Karl von Rummel of the Izmailovsky Regiment was considered the certain winner, had it not been for an unfortunate fall at the last obstacle, a water ditch, which put him out of the contest. As for the other competitors, the splendid horse of Grand Duke Dmitry Pavlovich was nervous and brought down several obstacles. The same befell the horse of Captain Alexander Rodzyanko, the celebrated Eros. Lieutenant Alexei Pleshkov likewise tumbled at the same ill-fated ditch where von Rummel came to grief, but his fall was the happier one, and he remained on his feet."
