Wallis does not merely look lonely but frightened: she could hardly fail to dread a meeting with the Queen Mother, whom she had not seen for years. But in all those 36 years Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon had kept no hostility towards her sister-in-law.

On the other hand, meeting her husband's relatives was not the worst thing for a woman who had lost the companion of her whole life; anyone would have looked broken, especially given the gradual onset of ever more serious dementia and the loss of her former physical health.

Wallis outlived David (as the Duke himself liked to be called, after one of his baptismal names) by 14 years. And, contrary to all fears, she was buried beside her husband in the royal burial ground at Frogmore.
