In September, the World's First Public Railway Turns 200
On 27 September 1825, the locomotive Locomotion No. 1, designed by George Stephenson, drew a train along the Stockton and Darlington line in the north-east of England. The name Locomotion soon became a common noun: the word "locomotive" came to be applied not only to steam engines but to other self-propelled rail machines as well.
In honour of the anniversary, from 26 to 28 September this year a replica of Locomotion No. 1, with its coal wagons and a copy of the passenger carriage Experiment, will once again travel its original route.
