Dysentery of Saint Louis on crusade in Jean de Joinville's book of 1309

In the prologue to Jean de Joinville's book of 1309 on the life of the French king Louis the Saint, four occasions are listed on which he showed knightly valour, risking his life for others. One of the four perils that met the king on his path through life was diarrhoea brought on by dysentery, which overtook him on crusade. The flux was so prolonged that he had to cut a hole in his breeches. Can you imagine a diarrhoea so violent that it found its way into the history textbooks?
