A little-known Picasso to go under the hammer in Paris

The work in question is a painting entitled "Bust of a Woman in a Flowered Hat", which depicts Dora Maar, the artist's muse and lover. Until now this portrait was known to specialists and admirers of the Spanish painter's work only from black-and-white photographs and a mention in the official catalogue of his works.

The picture was painted in 1943 and from 1944 remained in the family of its first owner, a major French collector. When the estate was divided, his heirs decided to put it up for sale.

The work has been provisionally valued at eight million euros. The auction will take place on 24 October.
