In a recent interview with Kommersant, Vladimir Tolstoy, who a month ago took up the post of Director General of the Leo Tolstoy State Museum, spoke of the main tasks awaiting him in his new office
The first item on the new director's list of priorities is to complete the restoration of the surviving estate in Khamovniki, where Lev Nikolayevich, Sofya Andreyevna and their children lived for almost twenty years. Within its walls Lev Tolstoy's study will return, together with his armchair and the famous writing desk at which the novel Resurrection was written. According to the plan, the work is to be completed in the summer or autumn of 2025. Among other things, Vladimir Tolstoy intends to undertake the restoration and subsequent re-display of the Lopukhin mansion on Prechistenka, the restoration of the former railway station at Astapovo, where Lev Nikolayevich died, and the recovery of other places associated with the writer's memory.
It is also planned to exhibit the writer's manuscripts more widely, many of which remain inaccessible today both to scholars and to visitors to the museum.
