Wolf photographed for the first time in Luxembourg, where the species was exterminated in 1893
A wolf has been photographed in Luxembourg. What of it, you ask? Firstly, the picture unmistakably shows the wolf from the cartoon "Once Upon a Time There Was a Dog" [Zhil-byl pyos], voiced by Armen Dzhigarkhanyan. Secondly, wolves were exterminated in Luxembourg as long ago as 1893, and since then traces of them have been found in the country only three times: in 2017, 2018 and 2020. But the wolf himself has turned up for the first time; until now people merely found a tuft of fur, a mauled sheep or, say, droppings. Do not laugh: Luxembourg has issued a brochure, Wölfe in Luxemburg, which not only explains that the predator is protected by the Bern Convention of 1979, the Washington Convention of 1973, the Habitats Directive of 1992 and a grand-ducal regulation of 2016, but also supplies photographs of excrement, in case you tread in somebody's leavings and are frightened to death that they are a wolf's. I warn you at once, though: you will need a ruler as well. Luxembourg has prepared for the return of the wolves in earnest, since it is only a matter of time before they settle here: an action plan, "Wolf", has already been presented to the public. First-world problems, for you
