In the late 1790s the celebrated Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun worked in Russia, painting august portraits and persons of the very highest rank, such as the last King of Poland; she devoted a separate part of her memoirs to the Russian period, and it has been published in Russian. The Yusupov collection acquired two portraits from her brush: Princess Maria Kochubey and the Italian singer Angelica Catalani. The beautiful Kochubey, in a red dress with a gold sash, that is, dressed in the Russian manner, is shown at the moment of sketching a portrait of her uncle Vasilchikov from his marble bust. Both works are still kept at Arkhangelskoye, and they can now be seen at the exhibition "The French Taste of the Princes Yusupov", which opened this week at New Jerusalem.
