During yesterday's telephone conversation with Pope Leo XIV, Vladimir Putin once again congratulated the pontiff on his election and wished him success in the discharge of his lofty mission
Both sides noted the great personal contribution of Pope Francis to strengthening relations between Russia and the Holy See. It was agreed to continue efforts aimed at the further development of these ties in the interests of building a more just world order. Particular attention was given to the situation in Ukraine and to peace.
A mutual readiness was expressed to deepen cooperation in the cultural and humanitarian sphere, and also in the protection of Christians and Christian holy places in various regions of the world, in particular in the Middle East. Putin expressed the hope that the Holy See would speak out more actively in support of freedom of religion in Ukraine.
The conversation was constructive in character. Both sides expressed their intention to continue contacts, the Kremlin press service noted.
I remind you that Leo XIII was the most active of the Roman prelates in seeking to establish relations with Russia, and constantly made attempts to open communication with Alexander III and Nicholas II
