Annual ceremony honouring participants of the 1821 revolution in Athens

Every year Greece holds a memorial ceremony honouring its heroic forebears, the participants of the revolution of 1821, also known as the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire. The country even has clubs of descendants of the fighters for freedom. The ceremony takes place at the memorial necropolis in the centre of Athens, the so-called First Cemetery of Athens. People gather to remind one another to whom they owe their Freedom. And in society no one's monocle cracks with displeasure on that account. I still maintain that Russia, too, ought to have a day of remembrance for the heroes of past wars, and that events devoted to glorious historical victories ought to be held there, for example, to perpetuate the memory of the war of 1812
