The State Historical Museum opens the exhibition "Nicholas I

The State Historical Museum has opened the exhibition "Nicholas I. The Ideal Autocrat," marking the 200th anniversary of the accession to the throne of one of the most contradictory monarchs of the Russian Empire.

The exhibition presents more than 260 items, including Nicholas I's personal belongings, a collection of military uniforms, portraits of the imperial family and even a self-portrait of the Emperor. Nicholas I not only loved painting and patronised the higher arts, but was himself a fairly able draughtsman.

The exhibition will run until 22 June
