In Filippovsky Lane the walls of the former Lepyoshkin Student Hostel of the Imperial Moscow University (1884), which now houses the Theatre House "Old Arbat", have been stripped of their plaster. The most interesting thing here, besides the vivid demonstration of the lost technologies of the past, is that the building is usually described as brick. Like many Moscow houses of the nineteenth century, it is in fact wooden, set on a stone and brick plinth and foundation, with an external finish of plaster. As for the timber walls, just look how beautiful they are: who could build like that today?
