Tomb of Henry VIII, Charles I and Jane Seymour beneath St George's Chapel at Windsor

In this vault rest the remains of Queen Jane Seymour, King Henry VIII, King Charles I and an infant of Queen Anne. A little crowded for a single burial.

The tomb beneath St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle was discovered by chance, during excavations for a secret underground passage intended for King George III. On examining the coffin of the executed Charles I, in all likelihood soaked in blood, it was found that his body had survived remarkably well: the severed head had well-moistened skin with the pores still visible, and the hair at the back of the skull was thick and dark, and one could see that someone had cut it, most probably for the convenience of the executioner. During the hasty burial of Charles I the coffin fell and damaged the sarcophagus of his ancestor Henry VIII.

It was in this very chapel that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were married not so long ago. Many English kings and queens are buried here, including the parents of Elizabeth II and her grandparents. Here, too, in their own good time, the Queen herself and Prince Philip will be laid to rest, God grant them health, of course.
