The Hermitage has opened the exhibition "…Look into the Eyes of Monsters…": Mythical Personifications of Terror in Antiquity and Their Conquerors. Its heroes are the dreadful creatures of mythology, the monsters and chimeras that symbolised the fears surrounding the ancient Greeks and found vivid embodiment in the art of Antiquity.
Among the exhibits: a Venetian shield of the 16th century with a hydra; an outstanding example of ancient toreutics, a silver plaque bearing the face of the Gorgon Medusa, dating from the turn of the 2nd–1st centuries BC; a most rare fragment of Etruscan bronze sculpture depicting the Chimera; and a masterpiece of ancient jewellery, a gold bracelet with sphinxes of the 4th century BC.
