Griboyedov's arrest in 1826, his interrogation about Russian dress and his release
In 1826 Griboyedov was arrested on the testimony of Prince Trubetskoy, who had named him among the members of a secret society. Alexander Griboyedov was interrogated by General Vasily Vasilyevich Levashov, a veteran of Borodino.
Among other things, Griboyedov was asked at the interrogation:
- In what sense and to what end did you wish Russian dress to be introduced in Russia?
- I wished for Russian dress because it is handsomer and more comfortable than tailcoats and uniforms, and at the same time I supposed that it would bring us closer to the people once more, as in 1812, - Griboyedov replied.
The investigation proved unable to establish Griboyedov's membership of any secret society, and a few months after the arrest the Emperor ordered that Griboyedov, a collegiate assessor, be released with a certificate of exoneration
