In 1635-1636, a domestic church dedicated to the Saviour Not Made by Hands was built on the men's side of the palace. It later came to be called the Upper Saviour Cathedral (Verkhospassky Sobor). In 1682 three palace churches, those of the Resurrection "Slovushchy", of the Saviour Not Made by Hands, and the side chapel of the Crucifixion, were brought together under a single roof, crowned with eleven gilded cupolas, whose drums were richly adorned with tiles and with images of saints on round copper sheets (the sheets have not survived). The building work was directed by the architect Osip Startsev
