The reasons may be purely formal, in this case administrative reforms that turn Christian places of worship into an expensive burden on the books of impoverished municipalities, but in the final analysis this is merely one of the carefully considered consequences of a deliberate policy. The importation of millions of people of an alien cultural identity also looks like nothing more than a system failure, or an attempt to "repair" it, say, in a demographic or economic cross-section.

We went through all this a hundred years ago, so, presumably, watching it repeated on fast-forward, we feel, besides the usual sympathy, some additional phantom pains.
