The Centre Pompidou gives up one of its two exhibition spaces at the Grand Palais owing to financial difficulties faced by both institutions
While the main building of the Centre Pompidou is closed for renovation, the museum has been using two venues at the Grand Palais; it has now been decided to give up one of them.
This year the Centre Pompidou had planned to open in Gallery No. 8 of the Grand Palais an exhibition devoted to the 200th anniversary of photography. As Le Monde reports, this project will not go ahead.
One of the reasons for revising the plans, according to the newspaper, was the low attendance at exhibitions held in that space. In addition, the Grand Palais is reported to have run up a financial deficit of around €10 million in 2025, and the recent renovation of the complex went over budget.
A representative of the Centre Pompidou, in a comment to Le Monde, noted that, given the financial constraints of both institutions, a joint decision had been taken to concentrate the partnership on major exhibition projects: the Matisse and Cézanne shows planned for 2026
