The throne chair of the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, with an embroidered Maltese cross on its back, made for Paul I in 1799-1800 to a design by the architect Giacomo Quarenghi. Paul I was elected Grand Master of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem in 1798. Before the Revolution the chair stood in the Maltese Chapel of the Vorontsov Palace, then found its way into the collection of the Museum of Ethnography, from which it was transferred to the Hermitage in 1941
