Three Roads to Eternity: A French Map of 1825
Three Roads to Eternity: a French map of 1825. The journey to Heaven and Hell is based on verse 12 of chapter 7 of the Gospel of Matthew: "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."
The righteous, bearing their cross with dignity, set off for paradise. Musicians, naturally, along with prostitutes and other miscreants, march in orderly step to the gates of hell.
A third road also appears on the map, running parallel to the path of the truly faithful. Those who walk it carry neither the banner of the cross nor the burning torches of faith, and at its end the grim reaper awaits them, to cast them into the flames of hell and eternal torment.
