Now You Too Have Seen Napoleon in His Coffin
Now you too have seen Napoleon in his coffin. In tattered boots. A curious miniature at an exhibition at the French Musée de l'Armée, closing any day now, shows Napoleon as his body was found in 1840 in the grave on the island of Saint Helena: in the uniform of a mounted chasseur of the Imperial Guard, bedecked with decorations, and wearing boots with holes at the toes. Formally, the grave was opened so that decor could be made for the former emperor's coffin, and the cabinetmaker Quesnel was so struck by the sight that he created this keepsake.
