The Tetramorph in the Song “Gorod zolotoy” and in Jacobello Alberegno’s Polyptych

"There a fire-maned lion shall meet you, and a blue ox, full of eyes; with them the golden eagle of the heavens, whose gaze is so bright, so unforgettable"

The words of "The Golden City" ("Gorod zolotoy"), the song by Anri Volokhonsky performed by the group Akvarium, quote the Old Testament Book of the Prophet Ezekiel and the Revelation of St John the Divine, with their description of the tetramorph that appeared to the prophet Ezekiel in his vision:

"And the first living creature was like a lion, and the second living creature like a calf, and the third living creature had a face as a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. And each of the four living creatures had six wings about him, and they were full of eyes within."

After the seals are broken on the book of Lives, these creatures say "Come and see", and the four horsemen of the Apocalypse appear.

The Lion, the Ox, the Eagle and the Angel are depicted, quite literally covered in eyes, on the central panel of the "Apocalypse" polyptych by the fourteenth-century Venetian painter Jacobello Alberegno.
