The canvas is currently undergoing restoration, which is a good moment to recall the dispute over its attribution: the version held by the National Gallery in London is sometimes named as the authentic Poussin.
That conclusion, however, rests on the opinion of Sir Anthony Blunt, a leading authority on Poussin, Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures and, as it emerged in the later years of his life, a Soviet spy. So there is no particular obligation to believe him.
