The Silk Banner of Ferdinand III the Saint of Castile and León from the Town Hall of Seville
The crowned king is surrounded by a border of heraldic lions and castles. The monarch is seated on a throne, holding a sword and an orb decorated with castles and lions. Beneath his feet we read the initials SPQH, for Senatus Populus que Hispalensi.
This is not the original appearance of the banner of one of the eminent Catholic kings of Spain, under whose rule the country was delivered from the Arab yoke. Its present form and the heraldic border were added during a restoration at the end of the nineteenth century.
The banner has been kept as a relic since 1520.
