Today the heir to the crown is said to be the child born of the marriage of David Bagration-Mukhransky and Anna Bagration-Gruzinskaya, whose family was precisely that of the Most Serene Princes and was reckoned to possess royal dignity. It is the second time in two centuries that different branches of the Bagrations have united. The line of the Bagration-Gruzinsky princes is junior to that of the princes of Mukhrani and ruled in the kingdom of Kakheti: in 1762 the ancestors of the Bagration-Gruzinskys united the Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti and retained power until its annexation to Russia in 1800.
