Today, as on every second Saturday of November since 1215, the Lord Mayor's Show was held in the City of London. One of the oldest civic processions in Europe brings together the most ancient guilds, municipal services, the military, diplomats and ordinary citizens, and is devoted to the election by 108 guilds of the Lord Mayor, the venerable ruler of the ceremonial county of the City. The right to elect the Lord Mayor was granted to the people of London by John Lackland. As for a mayor of the modern city of London, one appeared only under Elizabeth II, in 2000; before that, no such office existed.
