The Shostakovich Saint Petersburg State Academic Philharmonic celebrates its centenary and, to mark the opening of the new season, which coincides with Dmitri Shostakovich's birthday, will broadcast a grand concert live. The programme includes Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1. The piano will be played by one of the most gifted pianists of our day, Nikolai Lugansky, and the conductor will be Nikolai Alekseyev. The orchestra is an Honoured Ensemble of Russia, and, what is more, it is the very orchestra that gave the premiere of the First Symphony in May 1926. During the interval, a musicologist will give a short lecture. The concert will be filmed with 7 cameras from different vantage points, and the sound will be recorded on professional microphones, so the quality of the broadcast promises to delight. Tune in at 20:00!
